What's Happening Now?

Using feedback received through phase 1 and 2 of engagement, early design plans have been developed for the new Burke Mountain Community Centre. Previously called Northeast Community Centre, the new facility will be named for its specific location to help with wayfinding.

The new facility will include:

  • A six-lane lap pool, leisure pool with lazy river, hot pool, steam room and sauna
  • A double gymnasium for sports and active play
  • A fully equipped fitness centre with a weight room and studio space
  • Flexible, multi-purpose rooms for programs, meetings and events
  • A new branch of the Coquitlam Public Library, located inside the facility

Located beside the community centre, Burke Village Park is being designed and built at the same time. The new park will include:

  • A splash pad with interactive ground jets
  • Open spaces with flexible seating options to gather and connect
  • An elevated, accessible pathway bringing visitors into the mountainside park
  • Dedicated Streamside Protection and Enhancement Area (SPEA) for natural watercourses

With schematic design complete, which is a typical first phase of the architectural process, the facility and park are moving into the final design stages. The detailed design will be refined through the end of this year, and shared with the community. Early site work and construction will start in 2026. Both the facility and the park are expected to open in 2029.

About the Project

The City of Coquitlam’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan has identified a need for a comprehensive, multi-use recreation centre to support the growing neighbourhood of Burke Mountain. The City of Coquitlam is planning a new community centre that will meet the needs of current and future residents of the growing Northeast Coquitlam community—as well as residents across the community—with amenities including a pool, library, gymnasiums and a fitness centre. The final design of the community centre will informed by the feedback collected from engagement in earlier phases to ensure the needs, interests, values and aspirations of the community are reflected.
