Brookmere Park Off-Leash Dog Park & Amenities
City Council approved the final design of the Brookmere Park Off-Leash Dog Park on May 25, 2026 following community feedback on two options presented through an online survey. The new park aligns with Council’s Strategic Plan priority to establish community amenities that support growing neighbourhoods, such as in southwest Coquitlam.
The new off-leash area is targeted to open in late 2026.
About the New Off-Leash Area
When complete, the off-leash dog area will cover approximately .60 acres, including fenced and separate small and large dog areas with gated entries, and a covered shelter. In the coming years, Brookmere Park will be expanded as part of a development proposal that would increase its overall footprint from 5.34 acres to almost six acres.
Other amenities include:
- potable water for dogs and people,
- seating,
- trees and agility features (i.e. ramps, boulders, logs)
- pedestrian-level lighting
The dog park blends into the area’s natural setting, uses a smaller footprint to minimize impacts on existing amenities such as the ball diamond and picnic area, and is suited to encourage canine socialization by allowing owners with dogs of varying sizes to enjoy the amenities.
The separated fenced off-leash areas for large dogs and small dogs are located next to each other beside the baseball diamond. A path connects the parking lot to the off-leash areas. This option offers smaller areas for both larger and smaller dogs.
Public Input Informed Final Design
Public engagement was conducted via an online survey from February 13, 2026 to March 2, 2026. Input was considered alongside City parks planning strategies and design best practices to inform the final design.
In response to public feedback that expressed concerns about gravel as a surface material, existing turf will be preserved where possible within the off-leash area. Pedestrian-level lighting will ensure visitor safety and comfort while reducing worry from nearby residents about light pollution.
The survey input also indicated some concerns around loss of park space; however, in the coming years, Brookmere Park will be expanded as part of a development proposal that would increase its footprint to almost six acres.
Community feedback is captured in the What We Heard report.
