15 September 2021

The Environmental Sustainability Plan (ESP) incorporates new and existing environmental goals, objectives and actions into an overarching strategy. The draft document is available at www.coquitlam.ca/enviroplan.

The full draft plan is posted on the project page, and a summary video and highlights document are also available for those who would like to get a high-level understanding of what is contained in the ESP.

About the ESP

The draft ESP has been developed through extensive research and analysis, as well as a public consultation process in 2019.

The plan is organized into five themes: Climate Action, Built Environment, Waste Management, Water Management and Natural Areas, Wildlife and Habitat. Within each theme are related goals, strategies and actions that will support environmental sustainability for the future of Coquitlam.

The ESP also includes sections on how the City’s environmental goals and strategies will be implemented, monitored and measured. The implementation plan is summarized in a table that includes a list of over 125 actions, anticipated timelines, high-level cost estimates and lead City departments. To monitor Coquitlam’s progress, the ESP Dashboard provides a snapshot of measurable targets and trends to track successes over time.

A review and update of the ESP will occur on a 5 to 10-year schedule, consistent with other corporate plans.

Next Steps

Following the engagement process, feedback will be reviewed to inform refinements to the ESP. The final plan will be presented to Council later this year. Once endorsed, the plan will be implemented beginning in 2022.
